AMD developed a new quad-core chip with a brand name
As part of an effort to regain market share with Intel, AMD will introduce a new quad-core chip with a brand new name later this year.
These are quad-core Phenom chips with two Phenom FX and Phenom X4 versions, designed based on the Phenom X2 architecture. The name "Phenom" will become the main "card" in Intel's competitive strategy - confirmed by Leslie Sobon, director of AMD desktops. And along with Phenom, other chip brands like Athlon 64 X2 and Sempro will still be their flagship products.
AMD will develop and maintain quad-core chip designs different from Intel's, applicable to Phenom products and Barcelona's quad-core server chips. AMD will integrate 4 cores on one chip instead of two dual-core chips (total of 4 cores) as Intel does. AMD thinks that this approach will help the chip achieve higher performance.
Expected, Barcelono will be available in the middle of this year, and then the Phenom. Along with the launch of the Phenom, AMD will introduce a "4x4" platform with an unofficial code named FASN8, which the company announced last year. FASN8 is designed for high-performance system builders because it allows the integration of two Phenom quad-core chips, AMD's new ATI Radeon HD 2900 XT graphics chip, and a new chipset.
Meanwhile, Intel also said it would launch an AMD-like product for quad-core chips.
