At least 91 people died after an earthquake in Indonesia

Most of the victims died in the mountains of northern Lombok, the death toll is expected to rise to hundreds.

In addition to at least 91 deaths, 209 people were injured and thousands of houses were damaged in the earthquake last night in the island of Lombok, southeastern Indonesia, Reuters today quoted a spokesman for Indonesia's National Disaster Reduction Agency (BPBD) Sutopo Purwo Nugroho. Most of the victims were killed by collapsing houses in the northern and western mountains of Lombok Island, away from tourist destinations in the southern region. Thousands of people were also evacuated after the earthquake. The US Geological Survey initially recorded a 7-magnitude earthquake, then reduced it to 6.9 degrees. Indonesia's Meteorological, Climate and Geographic Agency (BMKG) recorded more than 120 aftershocks after the earthquake.

Hospitals in Lombok and Bali operate all night. Due to the concern that the earthquake continues to cause housing collapse, the hospital must leave patients in outdoor areas to ensure safety.

I Nyoman Sidakarya, head of the search and rescue agency in Mataram, Lombok Island, said the government would evacuate about 700 tourists and locals from Gili Island in northwestern Lombok Island.

"We will evacuate people from three islands in Gili. Some people are injured and are still in shock , " he said.

Saffron Amis, an English student traveling in Gili, said dozens of tourists were evacuated to a hill after the quake. Most of Lombok island was cut off. Visitors at international airports in Lombok and Bali were panicked, buildings were slightly damaged, but the flight was uninterrupted.

Lombok Island in southeastern Indonesia is a popular tourist destination, about 100 km east of Bali Island. On July 29, a 6.4-magnitude earthquake also occurred here, leaving 17 people dead, 335 injured, destroying hundreds of houses.
