Broadband Internet - Vietnam: An attractive market

Alcatel - Lucent's survey of Internet and broadband Internet applications (broadband) in Vietnam (VN) will help businesses to better define the business trend in the future. hybrid

From May 5-7 2007, Alcatel conducted a research on broadband technology users. The survey aims to help service providers find the answer: how to improve the use of broadband technology; needs of future broadband technology users.

The survey was conducted with two different target groups: ordinary Internet users (at Internet and workplace cafes - group 1), and advanced users (at home - group 2). Three sample surveys were conducted with 305 interviews.

Demand for broadband connection

The first objective of the survey is to understand the need for broadband Internet use in group 1. For Internet users in cafés, 52% of them have home computers, 22% already have phone lines but only 7% use dial-up Internet. The low rate of dial-up Internet connections is one of the frequent reasons group 1 visits Internet cafes. 89% said they went to the Internet café at least once a week.

The Internet user group at the office also has a high proportion of home computer ownership (63%). But the rate of telephone lines and Internet dial-up usage is not much higher (19% and 9% respectively), although 43% said they would prefer to spend more time on the Internet outside the office.

Picture 1 of Broadband Internet - Vietnam: An attractive market Thus, a large number of future subscribers will be Internet users at a café or at work. This is confirmed by investigation: 72% of Internet users at coffee shops and 75% of Internet users at work offices said that they intend to subscribe to broadband services to use at home for convenient and service reasons. specialize. However, cost is the main obstacle to connecting home broadband service.

According to statistics, current consumption for mobile phones overwhelms the cost of Internet café. Spending from $ 10-12, 50% of respondents said they spent the money on mobile phones, while only 20% spent on Internet café. With spending levels higher than 20 USD, the difference between the two expenses is negligible. Since then, the survey provides suggestions on the price of broadband services that Internet café users can meet and the provider can focus on: under $ 10 and $ 10-20.

The availability of computers also contributes to the need for broadband connection at home. Only 57% of the average user group has a desktop computer, 9% have a laptop (laptop). People who intend to buy desktop computers are 13%, buying laptops is 20%. Even a high-end user group, 95% already have a desktop computer, but the trend of buying laptops is increasing (16% intend to buy a laptop).

The increase in laptop ownership means that the demand for out-of-home connections increases because according to the survey, 49% of Internet users at work are limited in their ability / access level, so they prefer to spend more time on the Internet outside the office. About this, Valerie Faudon, Alcatel-Lucent's vice president of marketing, explained that the reason suppliers should have many forms of broadband connection, especially wireless broadband connections such as Wifi, Wimax.

With a high-end user group, most are satisfied with the service provided today and list the benefits of broadband connection: being able to connect to the Internet quickly, easily, stably, and speed enough Fast to view photos and movies, can make calls over the Internet. However, most of them only spend 10-20USD for broadband services. How to increase the average profit per user for the number of existing customers? This is the next content from the survey.
