Xinhua said scientists from the Earth Ecology Department of the Carnegie Research Institute in the US collected hundreds of photos of a sugarcane growing area covering an area of about 1,173 km2 in Brazil captured by satellites. In the past this land was used to grow a food crop. They analyzed the temperature, the degree of sunlight reflection and the rate of water loss in the soil as well as the trunk during the period before and after planting sugarcane.

The results show that the average temperature after sugarcane planting is much lower than the period of growing food crops.

" We found that growing food crops or grass makes the average temperature in the region increase because the plants release less water vapor. However, sugarcane leaves reflect more sunlight, and at the same time. Sugarcane releases more water vapor than the other plants, " said Scott Loarie, the team leader.

Loarie believes that sugarcane cultivation has two benefits.First, people can use sugarcane to produce bio-gasoline. When cars use bio-gasoline, the amount of emissions to the environment will decrease. Secondly, the presence of sugarcane fields contributes to reducing the ambient temperature, thereby reducing global warming.

The research team emphasized that the effect of reducing the temperature of sugarcane can only be seen in the fields of food crops or grass, not on vegetable fields. In fact, the level of sunlight reflection and steam release of sugarcane and vegetables are nearly equal.
