Old cats also develop dementia like the elderly. British and American scientists have discovered a key protein that develops in cat's nerve cells and destroys nerve function.
"We have long known that cats suffer from dementia, but this study shows that the cat's nervous system has been disabled in a similar way to those with Alzheimer's disease," co-author Danielle Gunn- Moore at the University of Edinburgh Veterinary School, UK, said.

In people with Alzheimer's disease, this protein creates a mess of nerve cells that block the brain from processing information. The team said the occurrence of this protein in cats is evidence that the animal also suffers from the disease.
The lifespan of cats is shorter than that of humans, so researchers can more quickly assess the effect of diet, high blood pressure, and medications on human disease development. However, understanding the disease also helps scientists slow the development of cat disease and help them have a happy life.
"As in humans, cats' lifespan is increasing and prolonged life also increases the likelihood of losing consciousness. Recent research shows that 28% of 11-14 year old cats suffer from at least one behavioral disorder. and the rate increased to 50% when cats were over 15 years old, " Gunn-Moore said.
Experts say good diet, brain movement and friendship will reduce dementia in both humans and cats.
