Cause of the earthquake in Hanoi on the morning of March 25

According to the director of the Institute of Geophysics, the earthquake in My Duc that caused shaking in the center of Hanoi this morning was because it was located in the Red River - Lo River - Chay River fault zone.

Talking with Tuoi Tre Online on the afternoon of March 25 about the cause of the 4-magnitude earthquake that occurred in My Duc district (Hanoi), Dr. Nguyen Xuan Anh, director of the Institute of Geophysics, said the area where it occurred was The earthquake occurred in the Red River - Lo River - Chay River fault zone. When these faults accumulate enough energy, earthquakes arise.

Also according to Mr. Xuan Anh, the Red River - Lo River - Chay River fault zone has had earthquakes in the past. In Hanoi, in the 12th century, a strong level 8 earthquake broke the stele of Bao Thien Pagoda in half.

"The law of earthquakes caused by seismic faults in the Red River - Lo River - Chay River fault zone shows that it usually takes hundreds, or several hundred years, for a strong earthquake to occur" - Dr. Nguyen Xuan Anh said. .

Mr. Xuan Anh also said that the earthquake that occurred this morning in the My Duc district area has a natural disaster risk level of level 0. However, the unit is continuing to monitor this earthquake.

From the above earthquake, Dr. Nguyen Xuan Anh said that it is necessary to study the Red River fault segment to assess earthquake danger in more detail, and the Hanoi area needs to conduct an earthquake risk assessment.

Mr. Xuan Anh also proposed setting up a number of monitoring devices in high-rise buildings in the city to quantitatively assess the level of shaking caused by earthquakes.

At the same time, there is a need to have a more detailed earthquake assessment map for Hanoi, which updates new earthquakes, from which to build scenarios to assess earthquake danger in urban districts to serve the Seismic resistance of construction works.

As Tuoi Tre Online reported, at 8:05 a.m. on March 25, an earthquake with a magnitude of 4 occurred in My Duc district, Hanoi, with a focal depth of about 16km.

At the epicenter of the earthquake, Mr. Phan Duc Trong - Secretary of the Party Committee of Bot Xuyen commune, My Duc district - said the shaking lasted about 5 seconds.

"We had just finished saluting the flag when we felt the shaking. Some office staff saw flower vases and plants on the table shaking. Through a quick inspection, no damage was recorded" - Mr. Trong told Tuoi Tre Online .

"I was having breakfast when I felt dizzy, the corrugated iron roof was shaking, the whole wall shook for about 4-5 seconds" - Ms. Phuong Thao (in Bot Xuyen commune) shared.

In some high-rise buildings in Thanh Xuan, Ha Dong, Nam Tu Liem districts. people also clearly felt the shaking.

Cao Duong commune (Luong Son district, Hoa Binh province) was also affected by this earthquake.

Cao Duong commune authorities said the earthquake caused a rock about 2 meters long and wide to fall from the mountain and roll into a house in the commune.

A large rock rolled down, causing the kitchen wall and livestock barn to collapse. Fortunately, no one was injured.

In Vietnam, earthquakes from 4 - 4.9 degrees are considered mild earthquakes . When an earthquake occurs, objects in the house vibrate and make noise. Many people felt the earthquake. Generally causes no damage or minor damage.
