Cellphone made from ... corn

In an effort to "Greenen" its technologies, the world's second-largest mobile phone maker Samsung Electronics has unveiled two new "mobile" models, made from plastic with the origin . corn sugar.

According to its representative, the W510 is the first mobile phone to use the special "corn-based" plastic that Samsung has built.

The company also does not use any heavy metals such as lead, mercury or cadmium inside the intestine.

"The corn-based plastic product is a completely environmentally friendly material. We hope similar initiatives will be replicated in the future," Samsung said.

Before Samsung, some firms also studied and tested corn-based plastic. These include NEC and Fujitsu - two electronics giants from Japan.

They have replaced bioplastic oil-based resins in a number of products such as laptops and cell phones. The idea of corn-based plastics is becoming more and more valuable in the context of increasing prices of petroleum today.

No Strangely

Back in time, even in the 1990s, many businesses have applied corn-based plastics to the production process of packaging, water bottles and diapers.

However, they were reluctant to use this material inside heavy products like electronics, because the corn-based plastic was quite brittle and weak.

Until recently, researchers have succeeded in mixing corn-based plastic with oil-based plastics to create a stronger , more durable "hybrid material" suitable for manufacturing laptops or phones.

The second mobile phone model that Samsung announced in this phase is F268, a product that is not made from bioplastics but is also quite environmentally friendly.

For example, the F268 is equipped with a siren, ready to scurry when the battery is fully charged.

Its accessories also do not contain PVC or BFR - substances that are considered toxic to human health and surrounding living space.

According to Samsung representative, the company plans to stop using PVC and BFR completely on all its phones since 2010.

The W510 will land on the Korean market at the end of June, while the F268 will be available in the Chinese market from early July.
