China built a power plant near the Chernobyl nuclear grave

Two Chinese companies plan to start construction of a solar power plant in the restricted area around the Chernobyl nuclear plant, Ukraine.

Two Chinese companies are planning to build a solar power plant with a gigawatt capacity in the 2,600-square-kilometer restricted area around the Chernobyl nuclear plant in Ukraine, Reuters reported on November 21.

The GCL System Integration Technology Company (GCL-SI) said it will cooperate with China Building Assembly Company (CCEC) to start implementing the project next year. CCEC is responsible for the overall project, while GCL-SI will supply and install solar energy components.

"The renovation of the area affected by nuclear disaster with green energy and renewable energy will bring many economic and social benefits. In addition, a power plant with a capacity of one gigawatt is also part of the Shu Hua, chairman of GCL-SI, announced the plan to expand abroad .

GCL-SI did not disclose the exact location of the solar power plant. However, one manager said that the site has gone through many inspections by the company's technicians.

"Ukraine has just passed a law to allow agricultural development and many other sectors in this region. That proves radiation here is under control," the manager said.

A unit of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant exploded in 1986, causing the worst nuclear disaster ever. Authorities have built a giant concrete grave above the factory to prevent radioactive leakage and set a forbidden belt around the area.
