China: Detects antibacterial soap and toothpaste causing osteoporosis

According to The Hindustan Times, triclosan is a common compound, found in antibacterial soaps, toothpaste, hand washes, mouth rinses and other personal care products.

Scientists at China Medical University, China, experimented with cell and animal lines, resulting in triclosan adversely affecting bone mineral density . The scientists also analyzed data from 1,848 women to determine the relationship between triclosan and bone status.

The study results are published in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism and this is the first study on the relationship between exposure to triclosan with bone mineral density and osteoporosis. Researcher Yingjun Li said that at present science knows very little about the relationship between triclosan and human bone health, but his research group has shown that triclosan is likely to adversely affect bone mineral density in Cell lines or in animals and women with higher levels of triclosan in the urine face many risks of osteoporosis.

Meanwhile, German and Danish experts have compiled a list of compounds that can make men infertile. A total of 96 compounds were analyzed. And one-third of the compound, including triclosan, is dangerous and harmful to sperm. Triclosan is an endocrine disordered chemical that has been banned by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for use as an over-the-counter hand sanitizer in recent years.
