China has just closed more than 100 companies and arrested ten people involved in banned use of pesticides and veterinary drugs for pigs.

According to Agriculture Deputy Minister Cao Hong Tan, this is the first step in a four-month campaign to monitor hygiene and safety in agriculture and ensure food quality.

China's plan is to control food hygiene at all wholesale markets in big and middle cities before the end of the year. According to Deputy Minister Cao, the surveillance network has so far reached 479 out of 676 wholesale markets.

Cao Hong Tan also said that recently, 93% of tested vegetables do not contain pesticide residues, more than 98% of pork does not have residues of clenobuterol hydrochloride , a substance that many farmers often mix in eating for pigs, causing adverse effects on consumers' heart.
