China: increase plantation area

According to the China Forestry Agency, in 2006, the country greened 5.23 million hectares of forest, bringing the total forest area to 175 million hectares. In particular, the number of volunteers participating in the afforestation campaign is increasing.

Of the regenerated forest, 375,200 ha of forest were planted in 2006 to improve the environment in Beijing and Tianjin when securing the two cities' protection against sandstorm attacks.

The forest regeneration campaign in the last five years has reached the rate of greening the Chinese urban areas at 32.54%, helping the area of ​​new trees to green 7.39 m 2 / person in 2005 to 7.89 m 2. / person in 2006, in which the density of greenery in cities increased from 3.6 m 2 to 7.69 m 2 / person.

Since launching the forest regeneration campaign, the greening rate in China has increased from 12% in 1981 to 18.21% in 2006. And for 26 years since the implementation of the planting campaign causing forest, the number of volunteers participating in planting trees reached 10.48 billion people. Only in 2006, the number of people participating in this campaign was 550 million.

As expected by the forestry agency, in 2010, the forest coverage rate throughout China will reach 20% and in 70% of the city, this rate will be 30%.
