China produces rice varieties higher than human heads for high productivity

Chinese scientists create a new giant rice variety up to 2.2 meters tall, which can yield 11.5 tons / hectare.

The rice variety is called "giant rice" bred by experts at the Subtropical Agriculture Institute of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in hopes of providing food to more people, according to China's People's Daily. The new rice variety was officially introduced on October 16 after 10 studies, with a yield of 50% higher than conventional rice varieties.

The team planted giant rice and harvested it on a field in Jinjing town of Changsha, Hunan province, China. Rice stalks average 1.8 meters high, the largest trees up to 2.2 meters tall.

Xia Xinjie, a researcher in the project, said productivity is expected to reach over 11.5 tons / hectare. The number of seeds that can be harvested from a rice root is more than 500 seeds.

Chinese scientists use a variety of new technologies to create new rice varieties, including mutation induction and hybridization between a variety of wild rice varieties . Giant rice can bring great benefits to China, the country is facing a shortage of farmers and an increasing population.
