Shiga University Professor of Environmental Science - Osamu Nagafuchi in charge of the study said: ' Pollution is rising due to wind from the continent (China). Fuji was "bullied" because it was a place unaffected by urban pollution '.

The level of pollution on this 3.776m high mountain has been monitored annually since 2007. It was implemented to protect the World Heritage site, which was recognized by UNESCO earlier this year.

According to the study, the mercury content on Mount Fuji is 2.8 nanograms in a cubic meter of air, twice as high as other heavily polluted natural areas.
