Climate in Ho Chi Minh City is getting hotter

According to Master Le Thi Xuan Lan, the Southern Meteorological and Hydrological Station, the average temperature data in Ho Chi Minh City from 1984 to 2004 showed that the temperature in the city is increasing.

In 1984, the average temperature in HCMC was 27.10C, in 2003 it increased to 28.10C and in 2004 was 280C. " In this 20-year period, there are five high average temperatures, low year, not the next year temperature is always higher than the previous year. But the trend of temperature is increasing gradually ," Lan said.

Master Xuan Lan said before that the highest temperature in the Southern region always appeared at Phuoc Long, Dong Xoai or Xuan Loc. However, in recent years, there have been times of temperature in HCMC equivalent to or higher than the hottest temperature of the year in these areas.

Another statistic of Master Nguyen Thi Hien Thuan, deputy head of the Southern Hydrometeorological Institute also showed that the average temperature in Ho Chi Minh City continuously increased. In particular, in the 5 years from 2001 to 2005, the average temperature in the city was up to 280C, an increase of 0.40C compared to the period 1991-2000, equal to the increase of 40 years earlier. Meanwhile, according to scientists around the world, changing temperatures at 0.20C can cause major harms.

According to experts, besides the greenhouse effect, the cause of warming in Ho Chi Minh City is also due to the urban hot island effect because the city currently has few trees, narrow streets with high buildings, reduces airflow flow.

In addition, an increase in the number of inhabitants, an increase in the number of motor vehicles, air conditioners and refrigeration equipment makes this warming effect worse. The amount of waste and more waste in urban areas also contributes to the changing temperature of the city.

According to experts, the change in temperature can lead to changes in the ecological environment, making the disease more developed. Besides, hot and stuffy air also directly affects human health. Due to the high population density, the impact of the increase in weather in Ho Chi Minh City is more ominous.

The change in temperature also affects sea level rise, changes in some air currents, affecting water resources and irrigation problems in agriculture.
