The well that spewed water tens of meters high in Gia Lai may have reached the depth of an air pocket.

On August 21, the Department of Natural Resources and Environment (TN-MT) of Gia Lai announced that it had received the survey results of a self-jetting well tens of meters high in Ia Kly commune, Chu Prong district from the National Center for Water Resources Planning and Investigation (Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment).

Accordingly, after water appeared from a well spraying tens of meters high at Mr. Dam Xuan Hoa's farm (Ia Kly commune, Chu Prong district) , the National Center for Water Resources Planning and Investigation came to collect information, make professional assessments, and analyze water samples.

The results determined that in April 2023, Mr. Dam Xuan Hoa drilled 2 boreholes (one 130 meters deep and one 170 meters deep) about 40 meters apart, but there was no water in either. In this area, there are about 10 boreholes from 100 to 150 meters deep, but there is also no water.

On July 30, from the 170 meter borehole, he drilled further to a depth of 186 meters when the drilling tool weighing about 2.1 tons (in the borehole) was lifted up by the force. Mr. Hoa stopped drilling and pulled the tool out of the borehole. At this time, the gas-water mixture sprayed more than 10 meters above the ground, and when it was first sprayed, the water smelled of calcium carbide.

In fact, the National Center for Water Resources Planning and Investigation determined that the amount of water and gas mixture sprayed high from the borehole mouth had a flow rate of about 0.2 - 0.3 liters/s. Through analysis of water samples, it was shown that the water quality was quite good, most of the analyzed parameters were within the standard limit values.

From the survey results and information collection above, the delegation concluded that the phenomenon of water-gas mixture spontaneously erupting at the well occurred quite a long time (2 days) after the occurrence of the 5.0 magnitude earthquakes in Kon Tum and there is very little possibility of a connection between them.

The spontaneous gas eruption to the surface may be due to the drilling process reaching the distribution depth of a gas pocket . The origin and characteristics of the gas have not been determined exactly and need to be studied in detail by in-depth studies. The water in the gas-water mixture may be associated with the mine or water in the borehole in the upper part of the gas field.


The water well has been concluded to be of good quality, with indicators within allowable limits.

Water and air quality have not recorded sensory indicators (color, smell, taste) of components harmful to people's health. Water quality is good with indicators within the permissible limits according to national standards on groundwater quality.

It can be determined that the water in the borehole is supplied from rainwater, through the process of direct infiltration from the ground surface, through permeable rock layers, and is unlikely to be buried water (associated) in mines in structures deep underground or other endogenous sources.

However, to draw accurate conclusions, it is necessary to base on quite in-depth experiments and surveys .
