Scientists at the University of York (UK) have launched a research project: seeking to create bones from the umbilical cord blood to treat bone deformities and fractures.

The project lasts 3 years, with a total of 2.5 million euros. In addition to British scientists, scientists throughout Europe also participated in the project.

According to Dr. Paul Genever, project coordinator, cord blood stem cells seem to be similar to bone marrow stem cells. However, these stem cells are difficult to identify. The goal of the project is to isolate and multiply them to get enough cells for treatment.

In addition, the project compared umbilical cord blood stem cells with bone marrow stem cells and embryonic stem cells. Another part is studying how to turn these cells into bones.

If the creation of bone structures from stem cells is successful, it can be used to treat bone deformities and fractures. Finally, bone structures created that way can be used to create more stable hip bones in transplantation.

It is known that about 2 million cord blood units are stored in Europe.

Not only that, many experts will evaluate ethical research, including ensuring that research is conducted to the highest standards.
