Dementia is a term for a serious decline in mental functions such as memory, language, orientation and judgment. Alzheimer's disease is the most common form of dementia.
According to the study, patients who regularly enhance their thinking and memory skills can perform routine tasks more than twice as efficiently as when they only take medications.
This is the latest study to confirm the benefits of keeping the brain working to help reduce the risk of age-related diseases.
The results of a study by a group of experts led by Dr. Anne Corbett of the Alzheimer's Association in Germany show that playing crossword for 4 days a week has a much lower risk of dementia than people who only play crossword once in 1 week.
The study was conducted on 98 insane people living in five nursing homes in Bavaria.
The progression of symptoms has slowed down after they enrolled in a program to perform mental and behavioral exercises.
Research results are published in the journal BMC Medicine.
