Data warehouse about the world's largest galaxy

Tens of thousands of volunteers helped to classify more than 300,000 galaxies, the first huge data warehouse of population information of large populations in the universe.

While computers handle such tasks as automatically measuring galactic properties such as size and color, the human eye is better when dealing with difficult-to-define features such as shape and structure, According to Red Orbit leads the new report of the University of Minnesota (USA).

American experts said that thanks to the contribution of the amateur astronomical community in the world, the Galaxy Zoo project has entered the second phase, allowing a large database of 10 times more data storage than any other about the galaxy before.

From February 2009 to April 2010, at least 83,000 volunteers participated in the Galaxy Zoo 2 project, analyzing online images collected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey.

They answered questions about galaxies, such as whether they were spiral galaxies or not, the number of twisted branches present, or whether they had galactic bands.

On average, each image is graded from 40 to 45 times to ensure accuracy.

Researchers say volunteers' efforts are equivalent to about 30 years of full-time work by a researcher.
