Police said the incident did not hurt people. The surrounding office buildings were evacuated to prevent the opening of the death pit."The power outage happened suddenly and I heard a loud bang. I stepped outside and saw a giant crater," a witness said.
Authorities suspect the death pit is the result of the construction of the Nanakuma extension of the city's subway system. Residents and neighboring buildings are required to turn off gas lines until further notice.
The massive death hole formed after two smaller pits gradually expanded and merged into one, causing subsidence and sandy soil to fall around 5 am local time."When I looked out, two pits were lying there and they continued to grow. I was terrified when a traffic light fell down at the intersection near where I stood. Intuitively told me to leave. immediately , " a young man recounted.
The water pipes were damaged after the incident that caused the death pit to fill with water. Fukuoka Bank reported a temporary shutdown of the network, while Fukuoka Airport also lost power in a short time.
