Deep in the desert, this is the loneliest post office in the world

Deep in the Tengger desert of Inner Mongolia, surrounded by dunes visible to the naked eye is the world's loneliest post office.

Measuring only 15 square metres, the wooden post office in the Tengger Desert doesn't have much to look at, but it doesn't have too many visitors anyway. Also, after more than 35 years of being abandoned, it really doesn't look bad at all.

Thanks to the efforts of a few brave individuals who learned of the existence of an abandoned old post office and the magic of the internet, it has actually gotten pretty busy.

Although it rarely receives any visitors, more than 20,000 letters and postcards were sent from the post office in December 2021 alone.

All thanks to the work of Ms. Zhang, one of the people involved in the post office revival. After putting all her heart into the project, she has to face the painful reality of seeing her work being ignored due to her remote location.

This is considered the loneliest post office in the world.

Located about 10km from the nearest road, the world's loneliest post office is in the inner city of Mongolia without too much traffic. But in the age of the Internet, that's not an insurmountable obstacle.

Ms. Zhang and her friend Luo Meng came up with a ghost script business idea for people who wanted to send letters and postcards from the world's loneliest post office without actually visiting the place.

Zhang's idea turned out to be a huge hit, especially during a pandemic when people couldn't travel to see their loved ones.

Now, it's hard for her and her colleagues at the post office to keep up with online requests from people asking to have mail delivered across China and to countries like Singapore or Australia.

Bringing this lonely post office back to life is somewhat of an adventure. First, Ms. Zhang and Ms. Luo Meng, had to convince a few others to help them rebuild it.

At first, they planned to build a house out of wood and transport it into the desert, but that was too difficult to do, so they decided to transport the building materials there and build on the spot, taking 20 days to complete.

After construction, they applied to China Post and after reviewing the wooden hut became one of more than 700 post offices in the country.

Every day, letters and postcards written here, embellished with the post office's distinctive desert-themed stamp, are transported 10km to the nearest road, from where they are picked up by trucks and then delivered. go all over the world.
