Doctors from the Duke Medical Research Institute of America conducted a survey of more than 111,707 patients who had had an implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) and found that about 20% did not meet the criteria for receiving ICD.

The researchers said: ' These patients have a significantly higher risk of death at the hospital than others who meet the criteria for receiving ICD ".

Some clinical trials have shown that an ICD can give life to an acute heart failure patient by detecting abnormal beats and transmitting electric shock to the heart so that it beats normally.

However, doctors recommend not to use ICDs for new heart attack patients, artificial heart surgery, severe heart failure symptoms or heart failure diagnosis.

Of the total 111,707 subjects studied, 25,145 (equivalent to 22.5%) of these people did not meet the criteria for receiving ICD, 9,257 (equivalent to 36.8%) of those with heart attack within 40 days and 15.604 (equivalent to 62.1%) people diagnosed with heart failure.
