Deforested area in Mexico increased rapidly in 10 years

The December 27 report by the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (SMARNA) Mexico said that the country is a country of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) whose forest area was destroyed most rapidly in in the past 10 years.

From 2005 up to now, the average forest area of Mexico has been reduced by 155,000 hectares per year. This North Central American country ranked 21st in the world in terms of lost forest area, accounting for nearly 29% of the total area of existing forests.

This is also the main reason for a 30% reduction in timber production, from 8.1 million cubic meters in 2000 to 5.7 million cubic meters in 2011, which is also the biggest threat to the environment today. live 2,606 animals and thousands of rare plants.

SMARNA said that the main cause of this situation is because the consciousness of the Mexican people is still low, the investment of this government is not satisfactory, only accounting for 0.1% of the gross domestic product (GDP), the corresponding $ 1 million per year, and lack a long-term strategy with specific provisions in this work.

Up to 56% of nature reserves in Mexico operate in spontaneous form, while 25% of the total protected areas have not yet been delineated, resulting in unclear management responsibilities.

In this situation, SMARNA emphasized that Mexico must quickly conduct scientific research to improve its knowledge of biodiversity in the national territory, and integrate this scientific knowledge into the main planning process. Public books on the protection and use of biodiversity resources effectively, responsibly, towards sustainable development.

Currently Mexico is one of four countries in the world with the most biodiversity with 26,000 plant species, 282 species of amphibians, 707 reptiles and 439 mammals.
