VN: one of the 10 countries in the world with the largest area of ​​afforestation

The report of the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) said Asia-Pacific is leading the world in the rate of afforestation. The achievements of forest planting in the last 5 years of this area have increased the forest cover area and are gradually compensating a part of the natural forest area destroyed in the late 20th century.

Asia-Pacific and Europe are continents recognized by the UN for sustainable forest development. According to FAO data, in the five years from 2000 to 2005, Asia-Pacific has replanted 0.56 million hectares of forest each year, contributing to offset 0.92 million hectares of lost natural forests. every year at the end of the last century.

Six of the 10 countries in the world with the largest area of ​​afforestation are Asian countries including Vietnam, India, Thailand, Japan, Indonesia and China.

FAO also appreciates the efforts of the Asia-Pacific countries in reforming forest-related laws, particularly the policy of allocating forest and forest land to households and social organizations. These efforts affirmed the political commitments of regional countries to sustainable forest protection and development.

However, FAO also warns that the per capita forest area of ​​the Asia-Pacific region will continue to decline and that by 2005 there were less than 0.2 hectares of forest per capita. Over the past 5 years, more than 5.68 million hectares of natural forests have been devastated for land for agricultural development, especially in East Asian countries.

The rate of destroying natural forests up to 0.8 million hectares per year is alarming for this area, contributing to the increase of harmful plant and animal species that destroy forests and agriculture, and at the same time causing disease. for human. This damage is estimated to amount to hundreds of billions of USD for the whole region in the last 5 years.
