Spanish designer O scar Viñal introduces the idea of designing a wingless supersonic hydrogen jet that can reach speeds of Mach 1.5 (1,852 km/h) and carry 300 passengers, Interesting Engineering on May 15 reported. That's twice as fast as modern commercial jets. This would allow the vehicle to fly between London and New York in less than five hours, compared to eight hours for the current transatlantic flight.

The aircraft named Sky OV has a modern shape resembling a spacecraft. Sky OV has a triangular design, meaning the fuselage and wings are connected to form one large structure. Therefore, the wingless aircraft model will have more spacious cabin space than traditional jet aircraft. The wingless design also helps reduce drag and increase fuel economy, according to Vinal.

The aircraft's propulsion system will run on hydrogen fuel combined with electricity, making zero-emission supersonic flight a reality. Instead of using a turbojet engine, the aircraft's power comes from a hybrid impulse detonation engine (PDE) along with a turbofan engine. The outside of the Sky OV will be covered with quantum dots, which help produce electricity from sunlight. The vehicle is also equipped with artificial intelligence-powered flaps to help improve the aircraft's performance.

"The entire new aircraft model looks similar to the 'flying wing' design used by military aircraft such as the B2, but the monocoque wing has a larger volume in the middle ," Vinal said.

The designer said this aircraft will have a slightly larger wingspan than the Boeing 747 and can operate at current airport terminals. The Sky OV is also lighter, produces less noise and emissions, and has lower operating costs than conventional transport aircraft. It has a range of 16,600km and a ceiling of 13,000m.

In addition to high speed, the luxury vehicle is also equipped with many luxurious amenities for passengers, including bedrooms, bathrooms, and even an in-flight chef. Sky OV has a spacious cabin along with window curtains and sliding doors. While some military aircraft and drones can fly at super fast speeds, Sky OV seeks to recreate the Concorde legend and make supersonic flight a reality.
