Detecting a strange tumor in the hand, the man almost died of a dangerous disease

The goitre turned out to be a sign of an extremely dangerous disease that could torture patients before they die.

Recently, doctors in Canada have recorded a relatively serious case. The patient is a male, 27 years old, went to the emergency department in the condition of "swollen and painful hands ", with many other dangerous symptoms.

It is known that this person discovered a small lump in his hand about 6 weeks earlier, and also about the same time he had fever, poor appetite, and weight decreased by 12kg.

Experts immediately carried out a series of tests, and found very strange sounds in the heart, and the amount of leukocytes in the blood was terrifyingly high. After ultrasound, they discovered a large tumor was inserting the aortic valve.

To confirm, experts try tomography and recognize a mysterious tumor as a cylindrical aneurysm . One of the patients' kidneys and part of the spleen died of lack of oxygen.

A small tumor in the palm of the hand, unexpectedly is a sign of an extremely serious disease.

Combining symptoms, doctors conclude that this is the case of endocarditis - caused by bacteria circulating in the blood that clings to the heart valve lining in clusters (called "scabies" in medicine - vegetation) . This ruptured layer continues to move into the artery, until it accumulates somewhere, causing aneurysm. In this case, it is the patient's hand.

At the same time, bacteria that travel throughout the body also overload the immune system, causing symptoms like flu - fever, sweating and weight loss.

What is the culprit?

The real cause was later found. The culprit is a strain of Streptococcus , often found in the human oral cavity. They enter the blood through holes in the teeth - which are formed because of poor oral hygiene.

These holes can lead to bacteria that do not harm the digestive system into the bloodstream, causing serious damage.

However, we should not worry too much. According to experts, endocarditis is usually very rare because of tooth decay. In fact, only people with congenital heart defects, or those who have had new heart surgery are susceptible, because scars or strange structures in the heart make it easier for bacteria to penetrate.

In the case of the unfortunate patient, he had three "favorable" conditions for the disease to occur. First, the dental care of this person is relatively poor. Secondly, his heart was abnormal, but never diagnosed. And finally, the aorta in the heart endothelium is only 2 valves, instead of the usual 3 valves.

Currently after surgery and antibiotic use, patients are gradually recovering. And certainly in the future, this person will have to go to the dentist, simply because he is too afraid.

The study was published in The New England Journal of Medicine.
