Named MMA, or 7-O-malonyl-macrolactin, this new substance offers hope in the fight against bacteria resistant to the 'last line of defense' drugs , reported on AlphaGalileo. .

The new antibiotic was discovered by scientists at the German Center for Biological Engineering Research (GBF) in Braunschweig, created with a new strain of bacteria living in the soil called Bacillus subtilis.

MMA antibiotics not only inhibit the well-known methicillin-resistant staph (MRSA), but also inhibit vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE), both of which cause infections in patients admitted to hospital. In addition MMA also prevents bacteria from dividing cells, thus making them unable to proliferate.
