Gallstones are more common in women than men and tend to increase with age. The cause of gallstones is chronic cholecystitis, bile stasis and gallbladder infection. Constipation also creates an opportunity for intestinal bacteria to grow, leading to duodenal, gallbladder and bile duct inflammation, thus making it easier for bile to settle into stones. Gallstone has 2 types:

Honey pigments: This type is less common.

Cholesterol stones: Often associated with high cholesterol in the blood. Cholesterol is easy to cause stones if it has other fats attached, often associated with obesity. Obesity is an important risk factor for gallbladder disease, according to research by the University of Kentucky (USA). Monitoring for 15 years showed that 3,200 out of 42,000 fat women had to undergo gallstones surgery. People with waist circumference of more than 91.5 cm are twice as likely to have gall bladder surgery than those with less than 66 cm waist.

In Vietnam, according to research by Viet Duc Hospital, nearly 42% of patients with gallstones have obesity.
