Discover new orchid species in Khanh Hoa

Scientists have just announced new orchids in Hon Ba Nature Reserve, Khanh Hoa.

The new species has the scientific name Podochilus rotundipetala Aver. Vuong et , distributed at a height of 1,400 - 1,500 meters.

Their characteristics are that they grow on rocks, their bodies are straight, slender, unbranched, sheathed and covered along the body, their bodies are 8-17cm long. Leaves of elliptical 2-row species. Their flowers are blooming one by one, petals thick, slightly shorter than the sepals.

Truong Ba Vuong (Institute of Tropical Biology) - a member of the research team said that the species is different from petals and flower lips almost round when flattening. At present, the scientific community recognizes species in Hon Ba Nature Reserve. Flowering time is usually in January 1-2 and May 5-6.

The study is the result of cooperation between Russian and Vietnamese scientists from 2014 to 2016, published in the Taiwania magazine titled: New Species of Orchids (Orchidaceae) in the Flora of Vietnam.

Record 4 species of orchid family

Also in Hon Ba Nature Reserve, the scientific community also has 4 new records that belong to the orchid family for Vietnamese flora, Taeniophyllum javanicum (JJ Sm.) Kocyan et Schuit (previously described for the first time in Java region) ); Bulbophyllum subtenellum Seidenf (first described in Nonkhai, Thailand); Phreatia densiflora var. vietnamensis Aver (found in Hon Ba, Kon Tum, Lam Dong) and Cephalantheropsis laciniata Ormerod (first described in Malacca, Malaysia).
