Insects live in the space of flowers and greenery of the cemetery and its surroundings.
With a length of 11 meters, this is the largest project in the country in this field. This particular hotel has room for all kinds of insects such as bees, beetles, scarabs and even butterflies that can take refuge there.
Here, insects are living in the space of flowers and trees of the cemetery and its surroundings.
This project is supported by the city of Antwerp and the Flanders Nature Conservancy (Natuurpunt) is in charge of the decoration.
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, Ms. Els Van Doesburg, Deputy Mayor of Antwerp in charge of Green Space and Animal Welfare, emphasized that this is really a 5-star hotel for insects, with compartments made of bamboo, bark, pine cones., meeting the individual preferences of each species. Therefore, this will be a favorite shelter for insects.
This is not the only initiative to protect essential insects in the ecosystem in the county of Deurne. In the cemetery, grass is mowed only twice a year. This allows many species of insects to live in the grass and ensures pollination of flowers and plants.
