Discover the largest planet outside the Solar System

A group of international astronomers who have discovered the largest known planet ever moves in the orbit of another star.

The planet passes in front of the parent star and is seen from Earth. Astronomers say it is 70% larger than Jupiter, but much lighter than the largest planet in the Solar System.

Named the TrES-4 , the new planet is located in the constellation of Hercules and was discovered by a team of astronomers from the project of the exploration of extrasolar planets called TrES. It orbits the star GSC02620-00648, located about 1,435 light years from Earth.

Located only about 7 km from the parent star, TrES-4 is very hot, with temperatures up to 1,327 degrees Celsius. It takes 3.55 days to spin around a parent star and a year on the planet is shorter than one year at Earth one week.

"TrES-4 is the largest known planet," said astronomer Georgi Mandushev of observatory Lowell, who led the research.

Now scientists are trying to find a way to explain the enormous size of this extremely hot planet.'If we can explain the size of planets in harsh environments, we will better understand the planets in the Solar System and their formation,' said Francis O'Donovan, graduate student.
