The coins were buried in a large jar at a depth of 30 cm and weighed a total of 160 kg, the official announced yesterday.
The ancient coins are valued at $ 5 million. In the jar contains coins bearing the figure of Marcus Aurelius Carausius, the Roman general who occupied England and northern France at the end of the third century and claiming to be the great king.
Roger Bland, of the British Museum, said the excavation of the jar was one of the biggest discoveries in the UK so far. Coins will reveal British history in the third century, a remarkable historical period.
"At the end of the third century was the time when Britain suffered from cruel invasions, economic crises and civil war ," Bland said.
Last year a bottle was found to find Anglo-Saxon coins in central England. In the jar contains more than 1,500 objects, mostly made of gold.
