Discover the only new gecko species in the world

Scientists from the Department of Animal Sciences (Department of Biology, University of Vinh) have discovered a new species of geckos, possibly the only geckos in the world.

This gecko species has the Vietnamese name 'Chau Quang gecko', scientific name: 'Cyrtodactylus chauquangensis' , discovered in the limestone mountains of Chau Quang commune (Quy Hop district) located in the zone of Bao Bao Pu Huong Nature Reserve.

Characteristics of this gecko species are slightly flat, wide and clearly distinguishable from the neck; flat muzzle; scales on the head of small seeds, with 30-31 scales intermediate between the eyes of the narrowest place; scales on back, homogeneous, small, round-shaped; wide, flat abdominal scales; body of pale chocolate color; 2 - 5 black - brown bands across the body; spots on the head are symmetrical; pale yellow belly.

The gecko species has the scientific name Cyrtodactylus chauquangensis.

According to the VNA, the scientists obtained 6 specimens of this gecko, of which 5 are being exhibited at Vinh University and one is sent to the Russian Academy of Sciences.

The discovery of this species of gecko has great significance, because the world is nowhere to be found. Thereby also adding a new animal for science, confirming the diversity and endemism of the fauna in western Nghe An.
