Discover the smallest species of

Scientists have discovered that insects carry the nickname "fairy flies" with a surprisingly small size, only about 0.13mm long .

Recently, scientists discovered an amazingly small insect, whose scientific name is Tinkerbella nana in tropical forests in Costa Rica.

They are nicknamed "fairy flies", of the chalcid wasp species (belonging to the Chalcidoidea family) that are usually parasitic on the eggs and larvae of other insects.

This fly is described with amazingly small wings, fragile and long-tailed like fairy tales, so they are named after the fairy Tinker Bella in Peter Pan. Therefore, researchers also call us "fairy flies".

Researchers have spent a lot of effort searching for this "fairy fly" species. Leading the research group - scientist John Huber - found them on insect eggs at some fallen leaves in Costa Rica.

Through this study, this Tinkerbella nana is amazingly small, its body length is about 0.13mm, its wing length is not more than 250 micrometers in length (1 micrometer is 1/1000 millimeter).

Under the microscope, these tiny insects reveal the details. They have thin bodies, long fringed wings . This wing shape can help micro insects beat their wings hundreds of times every second.

Researcher John Huber said, "We are sure, this T.nana is considered the smallest insect until now." The study is published in the Hymenoptera Research Journal.
