Discovered new carnivorous dinosaurs who once lived in the desert

Fossils found in southern Brazil reveal a new small carnivorous dinosaur that adapts well to desert environments.

Paleontologists from Brazil and Argentina on June 26 announced to discover a new mangrove dinosaur that had wandered on the arid desert land 90 million years ago. Fossils are found in the city of Cruzeiro do Oeste, in the state of Parana, southern Brazil.

The new species is named Vespersaurus paranaensis . They are small carnivorous dinosaurs that are about 1.6 meters long and walk on two feet. The excavated specimen at Cruzeiro due to Oeste has bite marks, a sign that it was attacked and eaten by larger predators.

The footprint of V. paranaensis was first discovered in the 1970s, but it took nearly 50 years for paleontologists to identify which dinosaurs created those mysterious traces."This finding is amazing because this is the first dinosaur found in the state of Parana. They are rare carnivorous dinosaurs , " said President of Brazilian Biological Society, Renato Pirani Ghilardi.

The land of northeast Parana used to be a desert in the past. Fossil analyzes show that V. paranaensis is well adapted to the arid conditions there. The team's new findings have been published in the scientific journal Scientific Reports.
