Archaeologists from the National Institute of Anthropology and National History have discovered more than 650 hardened skulls side by side at a building near Templo Mayor, one of the sacred temples located in the heart of Tenochtitlan (now the capital). Mexico City) of the Aztec empire.
They claim that this is part of Huey Tzompantli , the massive series of skulls that have led the Spaniards to conquer Tenochtitlan frightened when they capture the city.
According to historians, the skull in the tower is the cut of the warriors from before the Spanish conquest, and is part of many ancient Central American cultures.
However, in the excavation process from 2015 until now, archaeologists have found heterogeneous skulls of age and gender. This poses challenges to previous theories, that women and children are not involved in wars.
The skull tower has a circular structure with a diameter of about 6 meters, located in the temple of the god Huitzilopochtli , the god symbolizing the sun, war and sacrifice of the Aztec tribe.
Specifically, 676 skulls were discovered, and the number is likely to increase as archaeologists continue to excavate.
Aztec is the name of some peoples in central Mexico today. They dominated much of Central America from the 14th to 16th centuries with a culture of many identities and macabre sacrificial rituals.
