Discovering new cicadas in Lao Cai

Vietnamese and Taiwanese scientists have just announced a new species of cicadas belonging to the Karenia genus (Cicadidae family, Hemiptera family).

This new species of tick is collected at Hoang Lien National Park, Lao Cai province. This is also the first time this breed has been recorded in Vietnam.

This new species is named after the standard sampling site: Karenia hoanglienensis (Hoang Lien National Park, Lao Cai province). A detailed description of the species is published in the journal Zootaxa 3153: 32–38. In the world, only 4 species of this cicada genus have been published.

This species has a body length of 26.2 - 27.4mm; The front wing is 39.4 - 40.5mm long, 14.3 - 15.4mm wide. The width of the head is 0.72 - 0.73 times the width of pronotum.

It is known that standard samples (holotype) are stored at the Dutch Center for Natural Biodiversity, sub-standard samples (paratype) are kept at the Institute of Ecology and Biological Resources, Academy of Science and Technology Vietnam.
