DoS application vulnerabilities in Windows XP
Microsoft is investigating information about a vulnerability in Windows operating systems that may cause many applications to hang.
Source: Briancmitt This vulnerability (if true) affects two versions of Windows XP and Windows Server 2003. If the user is tricked into clicking a malicious link, this vulnerability will cause many programs, among them both IE browser, hanged.
According to a warning from security firm Secunia, which discovered the first problem, the flaw could also allow hackers to run malicious code inside the computer.
However, since there is no evidence to support this claim, so far, only the biggest threat is denial of service, or DoS on Windows XP applications. According to the Secunia scale, the vulnerability belongs to the "less critical" row, which is not very serious.
A Microsoft representative said the company is investigating the case and so far, Microsoft has not received any information about attempts to exploit the vulnerability. Once the investigation is complete, Microsoft will release a user or patch recommendation, in case the vulnerability is really dangerous.
Also waiting for a response from Microsoft is a serious flaw in Word software. There has been at least one online attack drilled into this vulnerability and Microsoft said the patch will be released in a security update later this month.
