Earthquakes followed the tsunami warning in New Zealand
The tsunami warning came after a magnitude 7.6 earthquake in New Zealand and Tonga this morning.
Many Christchurch residents are still obsessed with this terrifying earthquake
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center signaled after the earthquake struck off the Kermadec Islands.
The US Geological Department initially measured earthquakes 7.8 on the Richter scale and at a depth of 1 km on the bottom of the Pacific Ocean, making it possible to bring tsunamis in New Zealand and Tonga. Later, the agency adjusted the earthquake level to 7.6 on the Richter scale and at a depth of 20 km. The tsunami warning was abandoned almost an hour later.
John Davies, a local defense official, said the earthquake created a tsunami up to 60 cm high near the epicenter, but did not affect the New Zealand coast. He said the marines will remain in place for the rest of the day and the defense agency advises people not to go near the coast.
No damage was recorded in Tonga. However, some schools had to be closed and people evacuated to high-lying areas.
In February, a 6.3-magnitude earthquake struck Christchurch in New Zealand, killing 181 people. This is the biggest earthquake in New Zealand in 8 decades.
