Eating white meat can harm red meat

Eating a lot of poultry meat, also called white meat, also raises bad cholesterol in the body, like beef.

People who want to eat chicken instead of beef to reduce body cholesterol, may want to think again. The study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition on June 4 showed that poultry, also known as white meat, still has the ability to raise cholesterol.

Poultry meat, also known as white meat, is still capable of raising cholesterol.

"I am surprised that the effect of white meat on cholesterol is exactly the same as red meat , " said Dr. Ronald Krauss, author of atherosclerosis study at Oakland Children's Hospital Research Institute.

In Dr. Krauss's study with colleagues, 113 volunteers were randomly assigned to eat in three different regimes. The first mode is more lean beef, the second mode is more lean chicken or turkey, the third mode is more vegetable protein. Every 30 days, volunteers change their diet to the end of the project, trying all three types.

After each month, researchers measured the amount of LDL cholesterol or also called the bad cholesterol of volunteers. The results showed that a high-meat diet, whether chicken or cow, increased LDL cholesterol compared to a diet rich in plant proteins.

Authors identified development may not affect healthy people. However, people who want to reduce LDL cholesterol should consider reducing both red meat and white meat and using more plant proteins.

To protect cardiovascular health, the American Heart Association (AHA) recommends a balanced diet combining poultry, fish, vegetable protein and lean red meat. In addition, it is advisable to maintain a reasonable and active weight.
