According to Reuters, the 44-year-old Spanish nurse, Terasa Romero, was recognized as the first case of Ebola infection outside of Africa. She became ill in Madrid, after taking care of two missionaries infected with Ebola in the epidemic area and was brought back to the country in late September. The cause of Teresa's virus infection is still under investigation. Doctors in Madrid consider the possibility that she might accidentally touch her face with her gloves after taking care of the patient.
During the treatment period, Teresa received serum from an Ebola-infected survivor and used an experimental drug called Favipiravir produced by the Japanese pharmaceutical company. It is unclear which method plays a key role in her recovery.
Earlier, the nurse's first out-of-Africa infection had raised concerns in the community and criticism toward the Spanish government, when health workers said they could not. training and providing appropriate equipment to deal with dangerous epidemics.
As of October 31, the World Health Organization said there were more than 13,500 cases, of which nearly 5,000 died. The epidemic is showing signs of slowing down in Liberia but growing ominously in Sierra Leone.
