Europe's largest volcano
The Italian volcano Etna on Italy and also Europe's largest volcano yesterday "woke up", erupting lava and ash, with flaming red lava flows down the slopes.
Etna erupted strongly for a short time, from 2-6 am local time on May 12. The crimson lava flows have been seen flowing down the slopes but mostly flow into uninhabited areas.
Officials were forced to temporarily close the airport in the nearby town of Catania due to volcanic ash falling onto the runways.
Etna, with an area of about 1,250 km2 and 3,350m high, is Europe's largest active volcano. The last time Etna erupted was last January.
