Finding yew trees can reproduce with roots

Scientists found that many young yew trees are reproduced in the form of bud regeneration on the injured breathing roots of the mother plant.

The yew tree, also known as Glyptostrobus pensilis, can reproduce in the form of regenerating buds from breathing roots.

The above finding is the latest and surprising surprise of the Tay Nguyen University scientists group (Dak Lak) during the survey tours of the remaining two yew populations in Ea Ra (Ea H'Leo district). ) and Trep K'Sơ (Krong Nang district) to set up a marine yew species-species conservation project.

Scientists have discovered quite a number of young yew trees that are reproduced in the form of bud regeneration on the injured breathing roots of the mother plant. These young trees are of good quality, strong root systems.

For plants with breathing roots, regeneration of roots on the roots is very rare, on the other hand the breathing roots of the yew are very porous, making it more difficult to reproduce by regenerating the roots on the roots. Therefore, this discovery has caused great surprise in the scientific world.

Breathing roots of yew which grow far from the root to 6-7m and rise above the ground from 5-30 cm. So far, there have been many studies to breed yew such as cuttings, grafting, tissue culture, micropropagation . but there is still no method to bring positive results. There is still no possibility of pollination to produce seeds in the remaining yew populations.

Currently in the world, natural yew grows only a few populations with a small amount in Dak Lak. Studies in the period of time said that the fertility of yew is not propagated from the fruit, only living in land with moderate flooding, and the litter layer accumulates for thousands of years.

According to the survey, in the whole province of Dak Lak, there are still three sites with yew are Trich K'S in Krong Nang district (31 trees), Ea Ra in Ea H'Leo district (219 trees) and Cu Ne in Krong Buk district (5 trees), a total of 255 yew trees aged 50-600 years old, diameter 20-180cm.

At present, Dak Lak province is preparing a project for the preservation of yew marine species. If approved, the project will be implemented in the period of 2011 to 2015 with a total capital of VND 45.9 billion.
