Scientists have discovered " beautifully preserved " bone fragments of about 20 dodo birds (now extinct dove species) in a dug hole in the island nation of Mauritius in the Indian Ocean.

So far, only very little is known about this bird - a famous flying bird that is considered to be extinct in the 17th century.

A Dutch and Mauritius scientific team discovered bones in a swamp near a sugarcane field in the southeast of the island, including the beaks and bones of young birds. They believe they are at least 2,000 years old, and hopefully will better understand their lives.

The discovery is considered a turning point in the Netherlands. " The new discovery will allow the first study and reconstruction of the ancient world of dodo birds, before Westerners arrive in Maritius and destroy this creature ", Ha's Natural History Museum Lan said.

Dodo birds were hunted to extinction by Dutch and Portuguese colonists within 200 years after Europeans set foot on the island.
