Found a hundred-year-old ancient statue at Angkor

Archaeologists have found a hundred-year-old ancient statue that was once set aside outside an ancient hospital in Cambodia's famous Angkor Ruins Complex.

According to Angkor's governing body, the newly discovered statue, nearly 2 meters tall, was carved from the end of the 12th century to the beginning of the 13th century and was discovered during an excavation on July 29.

Cambodian archaeologists and experts from Singapore's Southeast Asian Research Institute found the statue about 40cm from the ground while excavating an area of a Angkor-era hospital built during King Jayavarman VII's reign. .

Although the arm and leg part of the sandstone statue was broken, but the carvings on the body and head of the statue remain clear despite the time. Experts predict the statue may be placed in front of the hospital as a guard icon.

Angkor complex, a UNESCO-approved world cultural heritage, was once the thriving capital of the Khmer Empire in the 9th and 15th centuries and Cambodia's most popular tourist destination.

Angkor's ruins lie between the forest and agricultural land to the north of the Great Lake and south of the Kulen hill, near the city of Siem Reap.

Angkor's complex of relics has over 1,000 temples of different sizes and shapes bearing Khmer architectural style, defined as the city of the largest and most crowded pre-industrial era in the world.

For decades, a large part of this area has been unearthed, but experts believe that there are still many precious knowledge treasures still deep beneath the soil of this relic.
