This study involved more than 50 agencies including the University of Munich, Munich Helmholtz Center, Germany and Massachusetts State General Hospital (USA).
The scientists conducted a comparative genetic analysis of 1,335 subjects with atrial fibrillation with more than 10,000 healthy subjects.
The result of KCNN3 gene detection is the main culprit in increasing the risk of atrial fibrillation.
According to the findings, the gene KCNN3 participates in a combination of potassium channels affecting the heart rate.
Based on this feature of the KCNN3 gene, in the future scientists can study new drugs that work on potassium channels to help treat heart rhythm imbalance.
