Germany: A combination of bus and tram
AutoTram is a new transport vehicle combining buses and trams developed by the German Fraunhofer Institute for Transport and Infrastructure.
The structure of this vehicle is similar to electric vehicles but the navigation system is not based on the rail system.

AutoTram vehicles are equipped with rubber tires and move on classic concrete roads. The electronic sensor system allows the vehicle to run on a virtual road and the optical system supports the driver in the operation.
This vehicle is 30 to 50% cheaper than conventional trams because it does not require rail and contact lines.
AutoTram can handle multiple propulsion systems, including a fuel cell and a diesel-electric propulsion system.
Fuel cells can be used to move vehicles from storage to use without polluting. The hybrid engine coupled with the inert gas storage system will then be used for public transportation.
This inert gas storage system allows for the extraction of energy during vehicle use at constant speed. This energy, once released, allows to reduce diesel consumption as well as pollutants. By completely shutting down the diesel engine and using only stored energy, AutoTram can travel over a distance of 2km.
This new vehicle will be showcased at the International Motor Show from September 21 to 28, 2006 in Hanover.
