Preserving unique heavenly rice varieties in Tram Chim National Park

Rare and precious rice varieties are preserved by Tram Chim National Park, Dong Thap province and included in the tourism program.

Mr. Nguyen Van Hung, Director of Tram Chim National Park said that Tram Chim National Park currently has abundant vegetation with more than 130 species of higher plants, 6 typical community types, including: Sen, heavenly rice, energy , mold mouth, pipe grass, melaleuca forest.

The heavenly rice community , also known as "ghost rice" (scientific name Oryza rufipogon ) is now preserved and preserved in Tram Chim Garden with an area of ​​over 800ha. Currently, the rice is ripe, is in the harvest season and has been implemented by the National Park to experience the program of harvesting rice on the exploitation range of 134ha.

Preserved by Tram Chim National Park to this day, heavenly rice is scattered in the areas and most in the area of ​​Phu Hiep, Phu Duc and Phu Thanh B stations. other in the garden wetlands like: Sun rice mixed with grass, north grass, grass only.

Sunflowers usually bloom in October and begin to ripen in November and December. Paddy seeds are ripe with black yellow rice husks, with long tails. This variety of rice only ripens a few seeds at a time, not even the same as other rice varieties. When the rice is ripe in the season of floating water, it is necessary to harvest and use boats and people when harvesting only to use trees to beat.

Heavenly rice is also good alkaline-tolerant rice, very good water, can overcome water with a depth of 3-5 meters. When the floodwaters rose, the rice rose from the surface of the water, each day the sky was rising from 0.1 to 0.15 meters and survived on the water, making food for many species. Thanks to heavenly rice, the food supply chain for the non-faulty wetland ecosystem in Tram Chim National Park. Rice of heavenly rice variety is small but very delicious, flexible and sweet.

Mr. Le Hoang Long, Director of the Center for Tourism and Environmental Education of Tram Chim National Park said: In this season, the garden often organizes for visitors to experience the harvest of sun rice. The park has 5 specialized boats (harvest) of rice, 134ha of exploitation in Phu Hiep station area, Phu Duc, accounting for more than 16% of the area of ​​heavenly rice in the Garden.

The exploitation of heavenly rice in the area of ​​Tram Chim Garden still ensures the ecological environment and creates conditions for visitors to experience the way to harvest sun rice, better understand the livelihood of floating water of Dong Thap Muoi residents.
