Giant squid appeared again, Japanese people feared

Fishermen named Tetsuo Okamoto caught this giant squid at a depth of 8m in the waters of Hyogo Prefecture. The ink is about 4.14m long; weighs about 200kg and has lost 2 longest tentacles.

Giant squid are often seen in the waters of Japan in Niigata and Toyama provinces in the past. Okamoto said he did not expect to see giant creatures in the near shore area like this.

Toshifumi Wada - Tottori museum curator - said the giant squid would be preserved for research. Scientists will learn why squid species, which live in the deep sea floor recently, often appear in Japan.

In early February, a local fisherman caught a giant 4m squid off the coast of Sadogashima Island.

Shigenori Goto, a 44-year-old fisherman, caught two giant squid off the island of Sado, Niigata, said: 'During the 15 years of fishing, I have never seen a giant squid. Recently, giant ink appeared a lot, I think there is a bad omen ' . Many other fishermen are as nervous as Mr. Shigenori.

Collection director at the Japan National Museum of Natural Science - Tsunemi Kubodera - said: "Giant squid usually lives at a depth of about 600m where the temperature is between 6 and 10 degrees Celsius. Here, the seawater temperature at that depth is reduced to about 4 degrees, so giant squid have to move closer to the shore to reach warmer temperatures so they catch fishermen '.
