Global warming is very urgent

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on November 10 called for an emergency policy to prevent global warming, on a visit to Antarctica. The Antarctic Peninsula has warmed faster than anywhere else on earth in the past 50 years with the highest temperature since 1,800 years ago.

'This is an emergency and we need to act urgently' - Mr. Ban said during a trip to the three science centers on the continent. The Antarctic ice sheets have an average thickness of 2.5 km, five times the tallest tower in the world with 101 floors in Taipei.

However, scientists said there were signs of the effects of climate change. Satellite images show that the ice in the West of Antarctica is getting thinner and may collapse in the future due to rising sea levels.

Mr. Ban is preparing for a UN conference on climate change in Bali, Indonesia in December, to reach a new agreement on emissions after the Kyoto Protocol expires in 2012. 'Gas change The post has taken place much faster than I thought, ' he said, calling on developed countries to do more. He affirmed that the use of alternative energy sources for oil and gas is a decisive factor in dealing with climate change.
