Scientists in the US are seeking to use the patient's own fat-derived stem cells to regenerate lost breast tissue. A three-year preliminary program of animal studies will witness stem cells ' sticking ' to the scaffolding structure. This scaffolding will provide the surrounding surface where alternative tissue can grow.
Peter Rubin, a researcher at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, said: ' Breast reconstructive surgery options are related to the use of grafting or the method of taking adipose tissue from another part of the body and are shaped to Breast shaped. However, the use of fat or fat-derived stem cells may be a better solution for soft tissue regeneration in patients with breast cancer . '
Experiments have demonstrated the flexibility of fat-derived stem cells. Exposed to special chemical conditions, they develop into cells with the properties of fat, bone, cartilage, nerves, muscles and blood vessels.
Experts estimate that 454 grams of fat extracted from liposuction can produce up to 200 million stem cells.
